Stress and Eczema
Q. I'm really excited about my wedding in July, but worried about my skin. I've always been prone to eczema, and lately it seems to be getting worse. It used to be just on my arms and knees, but recently some appeared on my chest which looks awful. I'm really concerned that it's going to show in my photos. Can you help?
A. Carole Batchelor says: There are lots of potential causes of eczema, and stress is the most common. As you're now in the run-up to the big event, it's not surprising that your skin is flaring up. I suspect that you are already doing the obvious, but I'd advise avoiding perfumed products on your skin from washing powders and fabric conditioners to cosmetic lotions and potions. The next most common cause is food intolerance. Stress lowers your immune system, so a certain type of food which previously gave you a mild symptom or none at all could now be causing a reaction. The three biggest culprits are dairy, soya and oranges. If you regularly consume any of these foods, I recommend cutting them out completely for a month and then gradually re-introducing them one at a time. It might also be worth getting yourself tested by a specialist for food intolerance. I would also check your zinc levels, as this mineral is essential for building healthy skin. A defi ciency in zinc can be determined with a simple taste test. Acne and mouth ulcers are also signs of low levels of zinc. |

Snore no more
Q. My fiancé and I have been together for two years now, but for the last year or so, his snoring has got worse to the point that it keeps me awake all night, so much so that we sometimes have to sleep in separate rooms. This concerns me in both the long and short-term. I'm excited about our honeymoon, but I'd rather listen to nature's sounds than my husband's snoring. Secondly, we don't want to start our married life sleeping apart. Can you help?
A. Carole Batchelor says: Oh dear. Snoring is one of those topics that everyone thinks is amusing until they have to live with it. Unfortunately, it's also diffi cult to get to the bottom of. Without knowing anything else about him, I can only make general recommendations. Firstly, it's worth seeing a GP, particularly if the problem is getting worse. If he is prone to sinus problems, especially if they are blocked, then aloe vera whole leaf gel will perhaps help. Take one tablespoon daily, making sure to drink plenty of water during the day. If he's not hydrated, then it's a bit like putting washing-up liquid on the dishes without water - the gunk may break up but it won't be washed away. The quality of aloe vera product varies widely but you can buy a good quality whole leaf gel direct from Cytoplan at www.cytoplan.co.uk or by calling 01684 310 099. |
